When you are looking to harness the beneficial properties of hemp oil, you undoubtedly want the best hemp oil you can find.
This is becoming increasingly more important as the market becomes saturated. There are so many mislabeled, contaminated, and generally unsafe hemp products.
After reading this, you’ll understand what to look for in the best hemp oil and how to sift out the best from the bad.
How to Find the Best Hemp Oil
There are some definite non-negotiables that you should look for in your hemp oil search. Checking these off your list will ensure you are getting a bioactive, pure, and potent product.
Full-Spectrum Phytochemicals
There are two kinds of PCR hemp products:
- Isolates. These are products that have been extensively processed to remove all of the other constituents of the hemp plant to isolate the PCR compound. This is then added to a base of oils or another liquid.
- Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil. This type of extract distills all of the compounds found in industrial hemp (which contains high levels of cannabinoids) down to be included in a base of oils like hemp seed, grapeseed, or coconut oil.
Of these two, there’s no question that full-spectrum hemp oil is significantly better than PCR Hemp Extract Isolates.
Here’s why:
The hemp plant contains a myriad of beneficial compounds. These include:
- Cannabinoids. Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoid compounds in hemp like CBG, CBV, and CBN. Each one has individual effects, with some of them being the most active and abundant in industrial hemp.
- Terpenes. Terpenes are molecules that add flavor and smell, but, beyond that, they also confer specific benefits.
- Flavonoids. Flavonoids are antioxidant compounds that neutralize free radicals in the body. Flavonoids found in hemp include apigenin, luteolin, kaempferol, quercetin, cannflavin A, and cannflavin B.
- Sterols. Sterols are fatty compounds that possess different properties depending on the sterol. The sterols in industrial hemp are β-sitosterol and β-amyrin.
Together, these compounds produce a more beneficial effect than isolate on its own. This is known as the Entourage Effect. A plethora of studies have demonstrated that the ratios in which the hemp plant naturally produces its compounds are perfectly designed for optimal bioactivity.
In other words, using a whole plant extract as opposed to a product that simply is an isolate is much more powerful.
So, one of the first things you should look for in the best hemp oil product is a full-spectrum or whole hemp extract.
Cold Processing and Supercritical CO2 Extraction
The constituents of hemp, like most nutrients, are very heat sensitive.
Heat is known to denature nutrients and destroy their ability to exert effects on the body.
Additionally, certain fatty acids found in hemp and the oils used to make hemp tinctures can become problematic in the body when exposed to heat. For example, omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, like those found in hemp products, are extremely sensitive to heat, light, and oxygen.
When exposed to these elements, the omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids become oxidized, called lipid peroxides.
These peroxides can damage cell structures and impair their ability to properly function. In the long run, this can lead to bigger issues.
To avoid this, you always want to opt for cold manufacturing processes and preferably supercritical CO2 extraction. This prevents any nutrients from being rendered ineffective and the formation of harmful lipid peroxides.
Certificates of Analysis
Certificates of Analysis are the golden standard to validate purity and potency.
Purity and potency are two factors that influence the overall beneficial effect of a product. For example, a pure product may be free of harmful byproducts and additives but the potency may be too low to see any benefit from it. Conversely, a potent product may exert an effect that could be outweighed by the risk of harmful contaminants present.
For optimal effectiveness and reducing the risk of adverse side effects, you need to know that you’re purchasing both a potent and pure product. You can verify this through Certificates of Analysis.
These documents will give you an overview of both the contaminants and the cannabinoid content of the hemp plant.
Some harmful contaminants you will want to make sure are not detected in the product are pesticides, pathogenic bacteria, and heavy metals. These are all documented to be toxic to the human body.
Additionally, you’ll want to verify just how concentrated the hemp oil is. What is the content in terms of active ingredients? What percentage is it? How many milligrams of active ingredients per mL of hemp oil is present?
If a company’s Certificate of Analysis is not present, that should be your first red flag. You may be able to obtain it via an email with the company, but if they don’t have it available on the website it may be best to look for a different company.
Selective Chromatography
Hemp extracts derived from the industrial hemp plant are naturally extremely low in psychoactive compounds. This means the oils and tinctures produced from the extract of industrial hemp are considered non-psychoactive.
PCR Hemp Oil Capsules: Water Solubility
Tinctures or topicals not your thing? You may prefer softgel administration of hemp oil. It’s just as effective!
But, to ensure its effective absorption you need to make sure the product is correctly manufactured.
A water soluble formulation or delivery allows for optimal absorption. This is due to:
- Increased surface area. The increased surface area of hemp oil particles allows it to more effectively interact with the body’s systems and exert its effects.
- Water-solubility. Water-soluble compounds are more bioactive in the body compared to fat-soluble compounds due to increased absorption.
Purchasing a water soluble hemp oil softgel ensures you are getting the most bang for your buck.
Dark Glass Packaging
Toxic chemicals found in plastic like BPA are fat-soluble. This means that they can easily be leached into oil mixtures like hemp oil.
To avoid this problem, you’ll want to ensure the best hemp oil is packaged in a glass container.
This glass should also be a dark blue or amber glass to protect the hemp oil from light exposure. Light exposure can lead to the formation of lipid peroxides in the hemp oil. You definitely don’t want this to happen!
